What I’m Into

Having connected to Leigh Kramer this month through her blog, I’m jumping in on her monthly link-up of What I’m Into for this past month. We’ll resume our regularly scheduled programming of sex, dating, and heavy relationship talks next week. And if you have a blog, you can join the link-up until Wednesday!

Books

This month had us traveling to visit family, which naturally means plane time for reading.
I couldn’t put down Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn. Recommended to me by Michelle Acker from Simply Complicated, I’m still thinking over what to do with what it taught me.

For fun, I read Andrew Klavan’s Empire of Lies. His writing is gripping, showcasing human nature for all of its roughness.

Also picked up The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom, an inspiring reminder that in the midst of extreme horror, we can all still instruments for goodness.

TV

There was finishing up Downton Abbey of course, but I won’t spend any time here bemoaning the Season Finale. It is what it is. Sigh.

My husband won’t watch Downton with me, but we have gotten into Ripper Street. He calls it the guy version of Downtown Abbey, “Great British drama but with more blood.” For humor, we’re watching Bob’s Burgers, The New Girl, and the recently canceled Ben & Kate. Sad day on that one.

Movies

When Argo won Best Picture, I finally got my act together and watched it. Worthy win. If you haven’t seen it, definitely worth the rental. Also caught Silver Linings Playbook and Skyfall. Still trying to go see Lincoln, though at this point, I think we’ll just have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Food

Being 5+ months pregnant, it seems eating is my part-time job. I’ve been adding Sriracha (Thai hot sauce) to everything, sprinkling in green onions where I can (they’re delicious in a cabbage salad with sesame oil & vinegar!) and discovering the power of chia seeds in smoothies.

Favorite new find this month: Ramen. As in Japanese ramen served in heaping bowls of steaming broth with egg, pork belly, black garlic, and of course, green onions. Go find some. Now.

Blogs

I discovered Preston Yancey (he also has a food blog, Coffee & Brown Butter, that is pretty funny, while providing tasty treats) this month, which is some serious food for thought on issues of spirituality, sex, life, women…you name it.

On a business side, I’ve started watching and reading Marie Forleo, a great resource for women with their own business.

My guilty pleasure has been the hilarious reviews of The Bachelor as written by Drew over at RocketShoes. Who needs to watch the show when you can read this?

Best Moment

It’s a tie: Feeling the baby kick for the first time and a week later, finding out we’re having a baby girl (just like we thought!). My favorite new feeling is when she’s awake, bouncing around inside of me. Breathtaking to realize there is a separate little life inside of me. Also slightly terrifying to realize I’m going to be responsible for her. But I hear that’s normal.

What were you into in February?
